You are not completely safe but it is still possible to avoid getting nail fungus infection by being careful and following several simple rules.

What can help me to prevent nail fungus infection?

To help prevent nail fungus and reduce recurrent infections, practice good hand and foot hygiene by following these steps:

Your Hands

  • Keep your nails short, dry and clean. Trim nails straight across and file down thickened areas. Carefully dry your hands and feet after bathing (between your toes, too).
  • When working with water, wear rubber gloves. This protects your hands from overexposure to water. Between uses, turn the rubber gloves inside out to dry. Change them often.
  • Don't trim or pick at the skin around your nails. This may give germs access to your skin and nails.
  • Choose an estiblished manicure and pedicure salon. Make sure the preferred salon sterilizes its instruments. Or better yet, bring your own instruments.
  • Give up excessive nail polish and artificial nails if you do not really need them. It may be tempting to hide nail fungus under a coat of fancy polish, it can trap unwanted moisture and make the infection worse.
  • Wash your hands thoroughfully after touching an infected nail. Nail fungus infection can spread from nail to nail.

Your Feet

  • Wear appropriate socks. Synthetic socks that wick away moisture may keep your feet dryer than do cotton or wool socks. If your feet perspire excessively, change your socks often.
  • Don't wear your shoes all day long - take them off occasionally. Alternate closed-toe shoes with open-toed shoes.
  • Don't go barefoot in public places. Wear shoes in public water pools, showers and locker rooms.
  • Use an antifungal powder or spray. Spray or sprinkle your feet and the insides of your shoes.
